Marijuana Addicts Speak Up

That was the original title for my book, but then it came to pass that most people didn’t really want to “speak up.” They instead were more like problem children, living in the shadows of a bigger culture, masking their problems with drug addiction. And in the end, what amazed me, was how well people survived despite chronic use of this substance that hardly brought them pleasure, instead it just kept them going.

Is the author a pothead?

Let’s get this out of the way right now.

The answer is:

No.
I am not a pothead.

I have smoked marijuana before in my life. But I do not smoke it nor, nor did I ever regularly smoke it.

If that shocks you, you should probably stop pretending you never tried it yourself as a teenager or young adult.

And that’s one problem related to my book: the secrecy involved. Everyone’s tried marijuana, most people don’t get addicted, and then some do, and can’t talk about it.

So wait – marijuana is addictive?

Ha! That’s the point.

No one thinks it’s addictive.

And while I don’t really want to argue the point with anyone who wants to argue with me, I will show them the other side of the equation; the people who, they themselves, admit to addiction.

My book highlights their life, day by day, and what it means to them to smoke, how it effects them, shapes their worldview, their struggles with quitting, and so on.

One problem I came into when putting together the case studies with scientific evidence was the lack of good testing in regards to marijuana addiction. A lot of studies don’t isolate marijuana away from other substances – that is to say, the junkie or addict didn’t JUST smoke marijuana. For the majority of my case studies though, that IS the case. Some of my stories from Marijuana Addiction Help, from forums, from guestbooks, and from people I met through my research contacts.

When I took a drug psychology class in college, I was shocked to learn that there is a small subset of marijuana smokers who become compulsively addicted to what most people consider a harmless substance. They suffered from the classic symptoms of addiction and withdrawal, and it was all based on just smoking weed! I had no idea this could be the case.

I began looking into it and thought it would make an interesting paper for my research class, and one thing led to another, and the case study turned into a small book.

Now the small book is going to turn into a real book.

And welcome to Marijuana Addicts- In the Shadows, They Survive, my first book.

This site will serve as an up-to-date look at where I am with the writing and publishing of my book. It might also contain excerts and interviews, links to media and press releases, and so forth. I’d really like to do some live video interviews if I can figure out the software to coincide with the book release.
